Unlike the screen in the Game Boy Advance SP, the Nintendo Game Boy Micro (GBM) screen is backlit, and users have the ability to adjust the brightness to adapt to a variety of lighting conditions. Now Nintendo takes aim at the pocket of your tightest jeans with the tiny Game Boy Micro system, quite simply the smallest and sleekest Game Boy product that Nintendo has ever created.
With the Game Boy Micro Nintendo wants to give us what Apple gave us. The Micro is bigger than iPod nano. The sporty, silver metal Game Boy Micro measures a mere 4 inches wide and 2 inches tall. Yet Game Boy Micro has the same processing power and plays the same games as Game Boy Advance SP models, complete with standard face controls and gleaming shoulder and Start/Select buttons that literally shine.
"We're making the gorgeous Game Boy Micro for image-conscious folks who love video games, the ones who want the look of their system to be as cool as the games they play on it," says George Harrison, Nintendo of America's senior vice president of marketing and corporate communications. "Because of its diminutive size and industrial-hip look, Game Boy Micro immediately identifies the person playing it as a trendsetter with discriminating style. " Game Boy Micro represents the latest evolution in the image of the Game Boy Advance line, but it is not a successor to any current system. The Game Boy micro sports a sleek vibe with portability and comfort, all in the palm of your hands. The Game Boy micro plays only Game Boy Advance titles, and that's over 700 games. Simply connect any combination of Game Boy micro, GBA SP and classic GBA systems.
The Game Boy Micro features a removable face plate that allows consumers to purchase alternative designs. The Game Boy Micro has a two-way switch on its right side for adjusting volume up or down. In keeping with the system's target market (the "iPod generation"), Nintendo has redesigned their Play-Yan music/video adapter to better fit the Game Boy Micro. The Game Boy Micro also has four limited edition styles: one based on the original Famicom video game console's controller: a blue bodied model with a faceplate based on Final Fantasy IV, a red bodied and red faced edition for the release of the game Mother 3 and a red bodied model with a black faceplate containing the silhouette of the iconic Pikachu from the Pokémon franchise.
In the United States and Canada, the Game Boy Micro is available in two regular colors, each sold with three interchangeable faceplates included: silver with black, "Ammonite" and "Ladybug" faceplates, and black with silver, "Flame" and "Camouflage" faceplates. The Game Boy Micro's backlit screen, which is superior to the original Game Boy Advance SP's (a later remodel added a similar high quality screen to SP systems), has been praised for its visibility. The Game Boy Micro relies heavily on proprietary (non-standard) ports because of its small size. For example, the game link port on the Game Boy Micro differs from either of those that belong to the Game Boy Advance SP, and it is not compatible with the Game Boy Advance SP's functions without special cables. While the headphone jack port has been restored, gamers must buy two link cables (Game Boy Micro to Game Boy Micro and Game Boy Micro to Game Boy Advance) to restore full multiplayer functionality.
Nintendo itself has admitted that Game Boy Micro sales did not meet its expectations, commenting it "failed to explain to consumers its unique value. Although quite good, the controller setup of the Game Boy Micro leaves a bit to be desired in the tactile department as there is no proper distinction to acknowledge when a button has been pressed. With a back catalogue of over 500 titles, the Micro has access to one of the most solid libraries of games ever to be published; many low on graphics, but high on gameplay.
Aimed at jeans pockets rather than jacket pockets, the Micro offers a 2" backlit display which, according to Nintendo, is far brighter than that seen on previous models, complete with adjustable brightness to allow for improved visibility whether outdoor or indoor. The display is flanked by the standard Game Boy face controls as well as shoulder and Start/Select buttons, and in a novel move for Nintendo the Game Boy Micro also boasts removable face plates to allow for a degree of personalization.
In a world of high-powered portable gaming consoles, the comparably low-tech Nintendo Game Boy Micro manages to stay surprisingly competitive courtesy of its focus on simplicity. The Micro looks high-tech, but it doesn't seem to put people off. Small enough to clip on a key chain, the Game Boy Micro trumps the vast majority of mobile phones yet sports a truly brilliant 2-inch display which, alongside that of the DS, is Nintendo's best to date despite its 32K colour limitation. Lets face it: who could resist getting their Mario on with this little Micro marvel. To hold a Micro is to want a Micro. Everything about the Game Boy Micro feels in place with the other elements of the system; you won't find yourself liking one feature only to dislike another. From top to bottom, the Game Boy Micro is a solid piece of design.
Conclusions:The Game Boy Micro is one of the slickest items to come from Nintendo in a long time.
